Promoting self-care, reading, and joy

"You can change the world with a hot bath, if you sink into it from a place of knowing that you are worth profound care, even when you’re dirty and rattled. Who knew?"

- Anne Lamott

A little about the Book Bath Box mission…

The guiding mission of Book Bath Box is to spread a love of reading, to encourage self-care, and to cultivate joy with each book bath experience. Everyone has their struggles, and everyone deserves care. Here at Book Bath Box, we strive to provide a truly blissful self-care experience for all our customers.

In addition to promoting self-care, Book Bath Box is also about caring for others. We've donated (and continue to donate) proceeds from our boxes and single-purchase products to organizations such as In Other Words Feminist Bookstore and Resource Center, True Colors Fund, Oregon Coalition against Domestic and Sexual Violence, the Malala Fund, and the ACLU.

How it all started

While I was always a fan of reading and soaking in the tub, I took this interest to a new level when I started experiencing the symptoms of Fibromyalgia. (Or, as I prefer to put it, when I started engaging fibro-monsters in thrilling combat!) These "book baths" started out quite simple, but over time they grew to be more epic and more thematic. I planned them out weeks in advance and always kept an eye out for new treats or products I could use for them.

In December 2015 I began my Booktube channel ( Winx & Ink ). Over the course of a few months, the channel grew, and I decided to hold a couple of giveaways to celebrate. On both occasions, one of the prizes was (surprise, surprise) a box I'd curated with supplies for a book bath. At one point, I also made a discussion video to talk about book baths in general, and the reactions I got to it all was surprising! Everyone seemed to love the boxes I'd put together and the themes I'd used. This is ultimately what fueled my decision to start Book Bath Box, and what launched this nerdy pastime of mine into a business.

In the beginning...

When I first decided to try out this whole subscription box idea, I really had no idea what I was doing. But, ever a scientist at heart, I decided to test things out and use the data I collected to plan for the next step. The first step in this plan was to create a Google Form and share it on my Booktube channel, Winx & Ink. Over 100 participants filled out the form, giving much needed data and much appreciated support.

Still hesitant to launch fully into a subscription business, I decided to start things off through a Kickstarter project. To my great surprise, the project was fully funded within two days, and within three days I'd sold out of the limited edition "Books on Mars" Summer boxes! This first round of 30 boxes went out without a hitch in July 2016.

Where we are today...

Today the business is coming up on it's 1-year anniversary and doing better than ever! From that first batch of 30 boxes, Book Bath Box has grown to now send out about 100 boxes per quarter! Each quarter brings more growth and more amazing experiences. I've learned quite a lot along the way, and I know there's still lots left to discover! I appreciate everyone's patience while I figure it all out. Although I'm technically the sole employee of the company, I couldn't make it all happen without the support of my friends and family. <3
